The use of carbide tools in gear hobbing offers a possibility to increase the cutting performance Cracks of the cutting edges which may appear almost at the beginning of the cutting process obstruct the successful application of carbide hobs. Such cutting edge fractures occur mainly owing to mechanical overloads of tile used carbide materials. For the determination of the mechanical stresses in the hob teeth during the cutting process and herewith for the optimal selection of tool and machining data, a computer supported calculation method is developed. The paper deals with this method. Calculations examples demonstrate the stress distribution in the hob teeth, which may cause cutting edges cracks in hobbing of helix gears.
