The influence of altervalent doping of TiO2 on its activity and selectivity under methane oxidative coupling conditions is investigated. It is found that doping TiO2 with cations of valence lower than that of the parent cation (Li+, Zn+2) results in reduction of catalytic activity and enhancement of selectivity towards C2 hydrocarbons formation. The opposite is observed upon doping TiO2 with higher valence cations (Nb+5, Ta+5, W6+). Hydrocarbon yields as high as 28% are observed over 1% Li2O-doped TiO2 at 800°C.
