Solid electrolytes can act as active catalyst supports to induce the effect of Non-Faradaic Electrochemical Modification of Catalytic Activity (NEMCA). The main features of NEMCA are summarized together with some new results on C2H4 epoxidation on Ag/YSZ and CO oxidation on β″-Al2O3. In situ XPS investigation of Pt/YSZ has confirmed that NEMCA is due to an electrochemically controlled ion spillover from the solid electrolyte onto the metal electrode surface.
