Content SummaryBioremediation is a promising technology for combating marine oil spills. In this study a mathematical model has been developed which describes the rate of microbial growth around an oil droplet and estimates the utilization of key nutrients (O, N & P) as well as the rate of hydrocarbon degradation. The effectiveness of additives like lipophilic fertilizers (uric acid and lecithin) and biosurfactants of natural origin (lecithin and rhamnolipids) on the degradation of crude oil hydrocarbons has been recently tested in our labs. The aim of this work is to use the developed model to arrive at the most suitable nutrient addition strategyen
