Summary

As the needs for fast, efficient and high qualityproduction increases, it is important for every company ormanufacturing facility to be able to optimize the resourcesneeded. This paper focuses and resolves the problem of best toolselection for a rough milling operation on 3-axis machines, especially for the production of sculptured surfaces. The toolselection methodology is based on a genetic algorithmoptimization procedure. The objective of the algorithm is toachieve quicker machining parameters. Direct comparisonsbetween CAM software simulations and real time experimentshave been performed to verify the results. Tool type comparisonbetween flat and ball end cutters is also conducted.
