Summary

Ramp Metering (RM) is the most direct and efficient tool for the freeway traffic flowmanagement. However, because of the usually short length of the on-ramps, RM is typically deactivated to avoid interference of the created ramp queue with adjacent street traffic. Bythe integration oflocal RM with Mainstream Traffic Flow Control (MTFC) enabled via Variable Speed Limits (VSL),control operation could be continuedeven if the on-ramp is full. Integrationwasperformed by the extension of an existing simple local cascade feedback MTFC-VSLcontroller via a split-range-like schemeassuming the same control period for RM and MTFC-VSL. In this paper, the same structure is revised considering distinctcontrol periods for RM and MTFC-VSL. The controller is evaluated in simulationwith the model of a real infrastructureand compared to stand-alone RM or MTFC-VSL, and exhibitsa satisfactory performance.
