Content SummaryUsing an arsenic-contaminated soil sampled near a geothermal field, batch kinetic studies were conducted at temperatures of 10, 20, and 40 degrees C to examine the rate of arsenic release from the soil. Sorption kinetic and sorption equilibrium experiments also were conducted in uncontaminated soils at the different temperatures. The rate constants of arsenic release from contaminated soil and the rate of adsorption of arsenic were determined with a pseudo first-order kinetic model. The activation energy and the constant temperature coefficient were determined for each arsenic release/arsenic adsorption process. Freundlich isotherms simulated the experimental data for sorption equilibrium experiments very well. Additionally, stabilization experiments were conducted to examine the efficiency of different amounts of zero-valent iron (ZVI) applied to reduce the release or desorption of arsenic from the contaminated soil. ZVI addition was observed to decrease the amount of arsenic released from soil significantly.en
