Summary

Waste disposal is the biggest humanity problem nowadays. This has been recognizedworldwide and we are lucky because waste treatment is applied, at least at developedcountries. On the other hand Nature is suffering a lot and biodiversity is reducingrapidly. The preservation and conservation of Nature has leaded European Union toestablish the NATURA 2000 network in continuity of Ramsar Convention. In this paperthe conditions and the status of the biotopes of the National Park of East Macedonia andThrace, and particularly of Vistonis lagoon, were studied and analyzed, because thesignificant and very important flora and fauna of this ecosystem render it worthy ofprotection, while at the same time, its characterization as Nature (Natura 2000, Ramsar,SPA (Special Protected Area) and SCI) make it of immense importance to the Region. The study involved examination of the effects of direct and indirect disposal of treatedsewage in the main body of the water of the lagoon, analysis of the biotic and abioticelements of the ecosystem and evaluation of the state of the anthropogenic environment. The implementation of this thesis was carried out by the means of literature review withemphasis on wetlands and lagoons, like the area under investigation in this thesis, analysis of the biotic and abiotic elements of the lagoon ecosystem, survey of similartheses, articles and studies, proposals of measures for effective protection and integratedarea management and probing analysis on the economic and environmental value of theenvironment.
