Περίληψη

In the present paper a detailed environmental characterisation of the extended sulphidic and oxidised mineral processing tailings in Lavrion is presented. Sulphidic flotation tailings are classified as hazardous, because of their high acid generation capacity, high total and bioavailable fractions of heavy metals, poor pore and surface water quality, they are also characterised as toxic according to the EPA-Toxicity Characterisation Leaching Procedure. Oxidised tailings are non-acid producing but are classified as hazardous because of the high total and bioavailable fractions of heavy metals and toxic with regard to the EPA-TCLP. The sulphidic tailings are serious and active pollution sources because of the mobilisation and transportation of pollutants through the acid drainage phenomenon. The oxidised tailings are characterised as high risk areas because the land they occupy is currently being partly used as residential and agricultural. Both types also pose the risk of particulate transport by physical means. The findings are being used for the prioritisation and definition of the appropriate remedial action.
