Content SummaryIn the present experimental study the stabilisation of sulphidic wastes exhibiting strong acid generation potential, with the addition of 5-15% w/w treated or untreated red mud (RM) was investigated in laboratory columns which were subjected to weekly wet-dry cycles using distilled water as leaching agent. The experimental results over a period of 200 days indicate the potential of RM to stabilise hazardous sulphidic wastes, substantially improve the quality of the produced leachates and minimise the risk of surface- and groundwater contamination. Use of RM for waste stabilisation reduces disposal costs and associated environmental impacts and may also improve the quality of the amended substrates prior to the direct development of a vegetative cover on waste disposal sitesen
