Summary

Olive oil mill wastewaters (OOMW) represent asignificant environmental problem especially inthe Mediterranean, the main olive oil productionregion in the world. Characterization of OOMWis carried out by determination of variousparameters, such as BOD5, COD and content oftotal phenols. The aim of this paper is toevaluate existing (physical, biological etc.) andemerging technologies for an integratedtreatment of OOMW. EU legislation regardingOOMW disposal practices is limited and onlyconcerns the protection of the environment fromthe adverse effects in soils and water bodies.
