Summary

Innovation is a major driving force for the economicgrowth and expansion of companies and the need to innovatehas become clear by now. The quality of the decisions duringthe design phase of a product development process is stronglyconnected with the assessment of the product, process andorganisational innovation dimensions. The developedmethodology addresses these three axes, using 30 innovationattributes, in order to obtain a product innovation profilethrough an innovation survey. This way a range of industrystandard Innovation scores called PIP-SCORES (ProductInnovation Profile scores -or innovation benchmarks) havebeen established. So far more than 600 companies coming froma range of industrial sectors that include creative industries,electrical/electronic, fire and safety, footwear, plastics, ceramics and textiles, have participated in this survey and theirinnovation profiles have been included in the database. Theproposed tool benchmarks the product innovation profile of acompany with the corresponding innovation scores fromcompanies coming from the same sector. Next, the tool utilisesa Design Structure Matrix, for mapping the dependenciesbetween the Innovation Attributes. Furthermore an InnovationImprovement Impact Value for each Attribute is introduced. Inorder to improve the innovative profile of a company, aconsiderable amount of resources is needed. Provided thatresources are usually limited to most companies, an optimalimprovement strategy, based on the Innovation ImprovementImpact values is proposed. The proposed tool (I-DSM,Innovation – Design Structure Matrix) aims at improving theinnovative performance of a company, by minimizing theproduct development cycle and by improving the performanceof the product development process.
