Summary

In this paper, we propose a classification engineemployed at Ethernet’s MAC Layer which uses aninnovative hashing scheme and internal replacement ofMAC Vendor IDs; the Hash Based ClassificationEngine (HBCE) compacts the MAC address tables andsupports extremely high speed decisions. Its very lowmemory requirements make it a very promisingcandidate for Ethernet equipments that would need tosupport classification at Data Link Layer and at MultiGigabitper second network speeds. Moreover HBCEcan also so be used very efficiently in lower-bandwidthwireless environments
