Περίληψη

In this paper we present an integrated approach for teachingundergraduates Computer Architecture. Our approachconsists of five steps: “read”, which correspondsto studying the textbook theory, “use”, which correspondsto using a simulator with appropriate graphicalfeatures to visualise the application of the theory, “simulate”,which corresponds to developing an architecturalsimulation, “experiment”, which corresponds to modifyingthe architectural simulation and observing the impactthat changes make to performance, and finally “build”,which corresponds to developing a low-level hardwaremodel in a standard Hardware Description Language. Inour experience, going down to the gate-level is of greatimportance, as students often find difficult to visualisehow different architectural approaches affect the actualhardware (both datapath and control). By following thisfive-step approach in our teaching we observed a signifi-cant increase in both student performance and interest inComputer Architecture and hardware design
