Περίληψη

The city of Athens, economic, political and administrative capital of Greece since1833, has been developed upon ancient settlements of 2000 years and more. Thedistribution of economic activities in urban tissue has been determined by a “laiserfaire”, under the influence of continuous political pressures. Market, with successivechanges, has formed a “situation of functional balance”, so much in the thematic levelas in their areal distribution1 that has not been extended yet in the Basin’s total. Thepopulation agglomeration after the second world war and the increasing requirements,led to the "city’s extension" with the creation of new residential areas that howeverdid not keep up with the creation of respective centers that would serve their daily orweekly needs in services and goods supply. Thus in new communities the existingfunctional centers are under- equipped so the residents are constrained to dailyjourneys in order to be served in the big central centers. This results in big time loss,aggravation of the already burdened circulatory network and further environmentalpollution2. The tumited urban mobility because of the low Approach-ability(insufficient network) and the complicated Accessibility (not rational land usesdistribution) increases the emitted pollutants because of the increased trafficpressures.Our Objective is a) the ascertainment of sector-based composition of regionalmunicipalities centers, and b) their maturity level in residents service. The centerssector-based composition will arise from the development of Functional StructureComponents of 54 Athens Basin communities and will be determined by the reveal ofthe same Structure through the employment in 29.184 Building squares of 54communities. The centers maturation, will arise from the comparative examination ofmunicipalities Functional Components structure during the decade 1978- 1988. Thechallenge consists in the functional enrichment of the under-equipped centers in orderto determine daily and weekly journeys.
