The reaction of Ca(NO3)2·3H2O and Sr(NO3)2 with trimesoyl-tris-glycine (H3L) leads to a two dimensional (2D) [Ca2(HL)2(μ-H2O)(H2O)5]·3H2O (1) and a three dimensional (3D) [Sr2(HL)2(H2O)7]·H2O (2) coordination polymer, respectively, illustrating the substantial influence of the ionic radii of the alkaline earth metals in determining the motif of the final product.
