The continuous growth of the web has led to extensive usage of Web Applications. Not only a large number of traditional desktop applications have switched to Web Applications, but also, present-day websites can be considered as browser-based applications. The rise of the complexity of such applications, combined with the increase of broadband high-speed access gave birth to the concept of Rich Internet Applications (RIA). The most popular architecture of such applications, defined as multi-tier architecture, demands the definition, development and integration of services that enable data transfer between tiers. This requires extra effort, usually disorientating developers from essential tasks. In the context of this diploma thesis, the design and development of Jargon framework is introduced. Jargon is a Middleware, which permits the consolidation of the Presentation and the Application tiers. It applies to applications developed with Sencha ExtJS as the client implementation and Java EE as the server-side. Jargon generates the data layer of the ExtJS and taking advantage of modern technologies, such as HTML5 websockets, makes it possible to transparently keep data synced across clients. Finally, it offers an API to support transactions which are initiated on the client-side and, also, enhancements of some features of ExtJS. Jargon gives the developer the opportunity to create interactive applications, focusing on the essence of the application.
