Summary

Groundwater is one of the vital resources, since it covers the needs of the areas for the production of drinking water and water used in a multitude of uses. Due to increasing demand, degradation of underground aquifers has been observed. This postgraduate dissertation is designed to simulate the underground aquifer of the Messara basin. . Geographically it belongs to the Apartment of Crete and administratively in the Region of Crete and more specifically in the prefecture of Heraklion, where it is located in the southern part of Crete. The Messara basin is the largest plain and the most important rural area of Crete. Just 1.1% of the basin is an urban area. The ARGUS ONE software, more precisely the PTC code (Princeton Transport Code), has been used for this research. The PTC code is a three-dimensional finite element and finite difference groundwater flow and contaminant transport simulator. The dissertation is divided into four chapters depending on the subject we are talking about. Initially, we present general information and equations that generally concern groundwater. Next, we describe the geological, climatic and hydrological characteristics of Crete as well as our study area. The PTC model and the process of entering the data into the program are described below. Finally, the results are presented for the various seasonal scenarios .
