Summary

Since the mid-20th century, it has been clear that cities and their planning have begun to lose their anthropocentric character, triggering social pathogens in the urban landscape.Research on urban mobility has identified a range of policies and strategies, dubbed SUM (Sustainable Urban Mobility), that promote sustainable growth through a modern mobility and urban transportation model. The presented work focuses on the study of three Sustainable Mobility Plans and their effects on the cities of Thessaloniki, Copenhagen and Barcelona. The selection of these case studies was particularly motivated by the fact that each of them is having a unique set of “urban needs” due to their difference in terms of size and demographics. Our aim is not only to present the practices that promote the sustainable urban mobility but also to investigate the degree to which they have influenced the existing transportation models.In the first part of this thesis, we introduce the reader to the concept of Sustainable Urban Mobility and describe the practices and conditions required for its growth. The presentation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans under study along with their implementation follows. Finally, we present the three case studies mentioned above, pinpoint the challenges they impose as well as their causes, analyze the packages of measures selected to address each of them, and draw conclusions regarding their effectiveness.
