Summary

The subject of this diploma thesis is the renovation and redesigning of a research institute in the space that used to be the Canning Factory “Pelargos”, in Argolis, next to the seaside settlement of Nea Kios, a refugee settlement of the inhabitants of Kios of Asia Minor. This industrial shell was for both refugees and the rest of the region an important chapter in the economic and social life of the area until the end of its operation, in 1986. It is a place that reminds the great narratives of industrialization and de-industrialization, but also introduces numerous stories of social interest. The starting point for its re-use comes from its interesting historical past as well as the memory it contains, combined with the wider geographical and social landscape and the important agricultural tradition of the region. Inspired by the landscape, that is the lowland and gulf of Argolis, as well as, the history of the adjacent settlement, the translation and redefinition of the local and regional complexity of the area is attempted, with the objective of rejuvenating an abandoned site. The operation of a Research Center, devoted to the agronomic and agricultural activities of the region, with the parallel existence of a museum, dedicated to the history of the site and the building, seeks to redefine the rural landscape as a space for developing social relations and participating in all stages of the production process, but also aspires to the improvement and connection of the area with the wider natural and urban environment.
