Summary

It is a fact that the rapid urbanization has led a great number of families to live in cities, with the kids’ daily routine and experiences being formed in an urban environment. While some aspects of the urban environment are not always suitable for fostering children, some major issues arise. To mention some, the importance of children to be able to play outdoors, to be capable of independently moving around the city, the significance of nature presence in the city, the overall safety and the public health. All the aforementioned topics constitute considerable factors and highlight the importance of organization and design in creating appropriate urban conditions for children. The agreement introduced by United Nations in 1989, regarding children rights, motivated the deployment of urban designs in favor of children. To achieve such an appropriate urban environment, various methods and practices are implemented. Some of them are relevant to the ways that a child moves around in public areas, like regions inside and outside the school, and also how all of these are connected together and with the rest of the nearby neighbourhood. In Greece the educational system operates according to standards and specific parameters that ensure adequacy in quantity and satisfaction for the education quality.This project researches suitable conditions and areas, under which schools in the city of Chania can be deployed, while it is also examined how a school will be connected and interact with the rest of the city. The methods that were used, to evaluate and justify the results of this project, are the field examination, observation, justification through acquired pictures and qualitative research. For data acquisition the following methods were followed: (a) information about schools and the surrounding urban area has been recorded, and (b) questionnaires were formed, regarding the ways and the required time for transportation to and from the school, the outdoor regions and the presence of nature near the school, the actions that take place around the school and the evaluation of the school and its yard quality.
