Summary

This thesis is based on a real life application, specifically on a hydro pump station. The objective is the development of an automation system for the proper function of the pump station, pumping of the water and its distribution to the water supply system of the region. This pump station is composed of 1 water tank, water valves, 2 motor pumps, 1 back up motor pump, 1 underwater motor pump, which is located in the water excavation site, 1 air compressor and many analog and digital sensors which are required for the proper function of the facility. All these elements are the inputs and the outputs of the automation system. For reasons that will be explained later in this thesis, the system has a manual function, which gives the engineers of the facility full control of all these elements. The automation system has been developed using a Siemens PLC S300. Furthermore, a User Interface system has been developed, using the TIA Portal software, for the control of the facility from the engineers. This User Interface has been developed using a touch panel HMI (Human Machine Interface), which is located in the control panel, but there is also a simulation of it in a Computer in the central office of the facility. Finally, supervisory systems have been integrated into the UI in order to create a complete SCADA system (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition).
