Summary

The aim of the thesis is to determine the suitability of a geomaterial for construction of highway embankment in Gouves (Iraklion, Crete). The results of California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests are used for the evaluation of subgrade strength and determination of pavement thickness and its component layers.Samples was taken from three project sites and laboratory tests were carried out on every sample for the determination of geotechnical parameters and CBR values (under specified moisture content and density).Initially, the particle size distribution analysis and the Atterberg limits values of the samples were determined. Following, the geomaterials were classified according USCS and AASHTO standards and the optimum moisture content was evaluated. Next California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests were performed at specified moisture and density conditions. The results were evaluated according to Temporary National Technical Specifications (TNTS 02-07-01-00) and the geo-materials were characterized for their suitability for an embankment construction.
