Summary

Our initial work was motivated by the need for both quick and accurate computer-aided measurement of human organs, which is vital for an early medical diagnosis. This paper deals with the thoracic aorta, whose abnormalities are often related to cardiovascular diseases. It presents an innovative approach for semi-automated reconstruction and NURBS-based simulation, which has been applied on real patient data sets. We developed a basic pipeline, which starts with processing MRI DICOM files from the thoracic region. In the first stage, image processing techniques have been used to enhance the quality of the images and then the tracking of the aortic cross-sections' boundaries ends up to the corresponding point cloud. Based on this cloud, a reverse engineering method generates Non-Uniform Rational B-SPLine (NURBS) surfaces. This is accomplished by fitting cubic B-SPLines to the cross-sections, which generate the 2D NURBS model, means the outer surface of the aorta.
