Summary

This diploma thesis deals with the Municipality of Nea Kydonia, located in the prefecture of Chania, Crete. More comparatively, the problem under consideration is to find areas that are suitable for hosting urban planning projects in the area. The reason is that the Municipality of Nea Kydonia is experiencing rapid growth in recent years in various sectors as well as population. Therefore, in order to answer the above question, some criteria based on both existing legislation and on the basis of international experience, bibliography and data on the current situation in the region should be defined and multi-critic analysis applied. These criteria are divided into two main categories, environmental and geological, and then each category is analyzed separately. The concept of Geographical Information Systems is then clarified and the criteria set out are in ArcGis 10 and through which the analysis for the implementation of the results has been applied. Finally, this method provides the possibility of constructing maps with the areas considered suitable for urban planning. As a result of its diplomatic work, it is concluded that due to its proximity to the city of Chania, it is showing strong growth in the urban area. Moreover, due to the unconventional construction of the previous decades, a natural locality has been altered, for example on the coastal front. In general, areas that meet the criteria are of limited size, while others are judged fit. Within the present diploma thesis, an attempt is made to describe to the reader the existing situation in the study area and the possibility of solutions to existing problems. Also, it is important to understand the choice of criteria for finding areas and the significant contribution of Geographical Information Systems as a tool for the design and completion of relevant studies.
