Summary

This postgraduate thesis concerns the issue of ground sediments due to extensive water-pumping of the Messara aquifer and more specifically the Moires sub- basin.Basic principles of hydrogeology are being examined as well as the mechanism of the development of ground sediments and analytical methods for their calculation. According to bibliography related with the Messara basin, data from previous research with the DInSAR method and the method of Special Trigonometry Altimetry are listed, as well as conclusions from the autopsy in the examined region.Stratigraphy of the Moires subbasin and the water level of the aquifer are being simulated with the FEM program PLAXIS 2D and subsequently the expected ground sediments are being calculated. The simulation includes the well and the pressurized aquifer with the piezometry of the period 1981-2001, for which data is found from bibliography. The characteristics of ground sediments are obtained from the ydrogeological research of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) in early ‘70s. In addition, the ground sediments are being analytically calculated with Bouwer equations. Finally, the assessment of the results of both methods (analytical and numerical) is summarised and a list of similar research topics as a future extension-contribution to this thesis is suggested.
