This diploma thesis investigates the production of ceramics and glass-ceramics from industrial wastes, namely from a fayalitic slag derived from a plasma furnace and laterite leaching residues; laterite leaching was carried out at atmospheric conditions with the use of sulphuric acid. Ceramics and glass-ceramics were produced after compaction of dry powder and roasting at temperatures 900, 1000, 1100, 1200 °C and 700, 800, 850, 900 °C respectively. The raw materials and all products were analyzed chemically and mineralogically using XRF, XRD and FT-IR techniques. Properties such as porosity, density, water adsorption, compressive and tensile strength, microhardness and coefficient of thermal expansion. Also, their toxicity and structural integrity were assess through firing, freeze-thaw cycles and immersion in corrosive media. The results are promising and thus the produced products can be used in a number of applications.
