Summary

Socio-political and economic developments, coupled with the constant expansion of the urban fabric, the fragmentation of public space and the lack of greenery are major problems for urban areas in modern cities. A variety of such problems can be found in the eastern part of the wider city of Heraklion where the Industrial Area, Heraklion Airport, Military installations and residential areas are located. The saturation of the expansion of the areas and the proximity of heterogeneous uses combined with the lack of free space around the airport has resulted in the inability of the airport to expand and its necessary transportation to the Heraklion region ,at Kasteli Pediados.The issue of airport reuse based on sustainable urban development and the redefinition of public space within the urban fabric has been the subject of research with examples of reuse international and national airports studied in the research study (“The issue of utilization of abandoned airport land-The international experience and the prospects in Greece”)airports prospects in Greece. This thesis examines the eastern part of the city in relation to the existing airport and redesigns the site of Heraklion Airport “N. Kazantzakis”,following its imminent transfer, as a multifunctional attraction enhancing the tourist character of the place. The aim of the intervention is the harmonious incorporation of the new part of the city into the existing urban fabric, the urban expansion of the New Bodrum region with the addition of functionalities and qualities of space that lacking from the area as well as the creation of a metropolitan park in the greater part of the area for future use. It is a multifunctional project designed to enhance the tourist character of the place.
