The environment in which we live, influences the quality of our lives and our behavior, as it is inextricably linked to the function of our brain. Our perception, memory, navigation and our senses, depend on our building environment and are shaped throughout our lives.For a better living, the colaboration of two sciences, is necessary: neuroscience and architecture. Neuroscientists focus on human behavior and on the brain, while architects use these results in design. The new science that is created is called neuro-architecture and it concerns all the environments we interact with, such as a house, a workplace, a school or a hospital.This thesis explores the impact of the building environment on the human brain, through bibliographic analysis and scientific research, focusing on mental health facilities. In these facilities the design rules become more specific as the brain of each patient, as well as their illness, is different. However, an enriched environment designed with rules of neuroscience, can help on the treatment by making patient’s stay more enjoyable or by reducing their recovery time.
