This dissertation looks into the relationship between architecture and archaeoastronomy, a composite science that uses archaeological methods and positional astronomy in order to understand the perception of ancient people about the heaven by analysing the material record left by them. Drawing conclusions from the analogous relation of architecture and archaeology, the dissertation tries to distinguish the commensurable relations of the former with archaeoastronomy, and to define its role within its scope. This is achieved by presenting the fundamental concepts of archaeoastronomy, its methodology and its examples, examining simultaneously the corresponding obligations, the potentials and the perspective of architecture in the field of archaeoastronomy, on both theoretical and practical levels. Finally, the question about the possibility of a discussion between archaeoastronomy and modern architecture is brought up, and some examples of modern architecture with interesting astronomical relations are presented.
