This paper intends to examine the basic principles of visual perception and urban space theories in the light of the morphological approach, in pursuance of the comprehension of the perceptual process of the visual form of the surrounding environment, and consequently the decipherment of the urban space form. In particular, human perception and the processes of perceiving spatial information through the sense of sight are probed, an overview of the basic theories of visual perception is provided, with an emphasis on Gestalt theory, and finally urban space theories by C. Sitte, K. Lynch, R. Arnheim, C. Rowe, F. Koetter and K. Dekavallas are perused. These theories are approached in order to explore the figure-ground relationship in the urban fabric and to inquire its effects on the delineation of the visual form.
