Summary

This thesis concerns the reuse of a neoclassical building in Chania and its transformation into a Museum. Specifically, the villa of Manousos Koundouros in Halepa, Chania, built in 1909 during the Cretan State, was chosen. The aim of the work is to utilize the historic building and create a Museum called "Museum - Urban Mansion of Manousos Koundouros", a museum "of itself" which will highlight the urban culture of Chania during the Cretan State and the cosmopolitanism that distinguishes it as a result of the administration of the island by the Foreign Forces. Although the culture of the countryside of Crete (folklore themes, etc.) has been sufficiently highlighted through a significant number of historical - folklore museums on the island, the same is not true of urban culture as it develops especially in the Cretan State’s period. As part of the work, the rendering of the proposed interior design of the urban mansion is carried out, which aims to revive the daily life of an urban family of this era. The proposal invites visitors, through their journey in space and time, primarily to experience the atmosphere of the urban mansion of this period typical for Crete through a permanent exhibition that will be housed in the building and will include objects which will highlight aspects of private life, audio and digital applications as well as information about the historical context of the time. At the same time, the transformation of the neoclassical building into a museum aims to create a cultural and tourist pole, to expand the perception of the citizens about the cultural reserve of the place as well as to raise awareness about newer cultural heritage.
