The energy enhancement of ports and, therefore, their sustainable development is a vital goal for their authorities. This strategic direction is necessary for the obligation for maintenance and improvement of the current level of their commercial activity. In particular, it is essential to ensure that the diminishing of the environmental impacts of the port-related operations will be accomplished by reckoning in the sectors of economic euphoria and social acceptance.This diploma thesis focuses on the conversion of a conventional port, based on the use of outdated technologies, in a modernized port, with zero energy footprint, enabling its grid-independent operation. After studying and evaluating the current strategies, technological uses, energy sources, the research team proposed available alternative fuels and energy management and production systems, and nine different scenarios were modeled and examined, by using optimization software (HomerPRO). The main regulatory parameters that were utilized concern the production of energy from photovoltaic panels and wind turbines, the utilization of energy storage systems (batteries), and the inclusion of the energy offset of produced-consumed energy (Net-Metering).Through the analysis and the comparison of the examined systems, it was proven that the current system is not in line with the technological progress and the contemporary needs of a modern port, and need to be renovated. Afterward, the optimal solution was chosen to achieve the sustainable development of the case-study port, taking into account real data for energy consumption and meteorological data of the area. In particular, it was proven that the optimal selected scenario leads to complete elimination of Green House Gases emissions due to the operations of the port, while at the same time, the Levelized Cost of energy is reduced by more than 47%. Concluding, there are many technologies available that were not taken into account in the present study, and their examination and evaluation are suggested for similar future ventur.
