Summary

The subject of this dissertation/research is the process of Chain Extension of post-consumer recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET), in order to use it in high value products. One of the most important modern environmental problems, the increase in plastic waste is being addressed in this work. The most widely used thermoplastic polyester is poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). This material is recycled systematically, but it has been observed that in each cycle its molecular weight and physico-mechanical properties, as well as its chemical resistance can be reduced. Thus, the economic value of the material decreases after recycling. This material loses molecular weight because of hydrolysis, thermal degradation and/or photolysis. The process of chain expansion aims to increase the molecular weight of recycled PET by various methods, either in the melt state or in the solid state or by reactive extrusion, using appropriate chemicals that can increase the chain length of the polymer. The present work consists of a literature overview and aims to find the best experimental conditions and parameters that influence the results of these processes, as well as to compare the available chemicals that achieve molecular weight increase.
