The aim of the dissertation is to investigate the relationship of the contemporary city with urban prosperity, the achievement of physical and mental well-being of its inhabitants. The key research question is on the one hand how smart cities today are responding to the contemporary challenge of improving the overall quality of life in cities but also how citizens themselves are playing an active role in this process. Focusing on public space, research develops a methodology based on the use of urban technologies and data visualization for the participatory regain of existing public open spaces in the city in terms of urban prosperity. Through the proposed methodology it is expected that a cyclical process can continuously empower the urban spaces regeneration, partially at neighborhood level and overall at the city level, and help public open spaces be shaped as more sustainable urban environments with the active role of citizens.
