Summary

The discussion about the Leoforos Alexandras Stadium regularly returns to the public discourse about the city of Athens. This project attempts to manage the existing structure of the stadium and adaptively reuse it. Initially, an analysis of the urban characteristics of the area is made, while the importance of the stadium in the collective memory of the inhabitants is presented. Then a series of interventions in the stands is proposed in order to involve the area of the stadium with the city. The new building structure is related to the existing stands and hosts uses of mild athletic activities, sports and nutrition counseling, an auditorium and other secondary uses. These transformations lead to a compact but porous urban structure that offers public space to the city and involves a wide range of the population. At the same time, these interventions are part of a general urban strategy that includes social housing blocks and public space design.
