Summary

The purpose of this thesis is the planning of the expansion of the open pit mine of lignite in the area of Megalopolis and more specifically in the area of West Horemi.Initially, general data are presented pertaining to the genesis of lignite in Greece and more specifically at the basin of Megalopolis. Then, geomorphological and geological data for of the lignite basin in the area of Megalopolis are presented. Reference is made to the tectonic and stratigraphic structure of the area as well as to the Horemi lignite mine.Chapter 3 is concerned with the surface mining methods of lignite and the continuous mining methods and the equipment used in these methods. The general process of extraction of lignite deposits as well as the surface exploitation in the area under study is presented. Reference is being also made to the process of deposition and the mining complex in a lignite mine. Finally, the method by which a bucket excavator operates on most of the fronts of Megalopolis is presented. The final part of the thesis, presented in Chapters 4 and 5, presents the set of data, the management and storage of data in a database, and the current state of the lignite mine. The annual progress for the first two years was then planned and the lignite reserves and stripping ratio were calculated.
