Summary

The subject of the present thesis is the study of the effect of the slope angle of the surface quarry on the recoverability of marble or ornamental stone deposits. If on open pit mining an ad hoc slope of the quarry slope has been set (generally called the angle that forms the horizontal plane with what can be called a quarry slope) then a percentage of marketable marble will remain unexploited and the reserves will be reduced. On the other hand there is always an upper limit of the slope angle below which the stability of the slopes is ensured. It is noted that the parallel consideration of the effect of this angle on the stability of the slope is excluded, which has supposedly been studied before and it has been found that the latter is not at stake. This study is based on real exploits of the Estremoz quarry zone to demonstrate the large difference in the uptake of pink marble stocks in quarries whose final slope angle exceeds 70o-73o.For this purpose, a hypothetical quarry was designed with similar characteristics to those of the area mentioned above with 4 different angles of final slopes, with the help of Autocad to compare the mineral (quarry) reserves of each case of final slope angle 69o, 75o, 79o, and 90o. Afterwards, the cost-effectiveness of the operation was estimated for each of these four operating scenarios.
