Summary

The evolution of human civilization is intertwined with the way in which it satisfies its energy needs. These needs are mostly met through the consumption of oil as a fuel but also as a raw material for the production of lubricants, chemicals and other industrial products that aim to improve the quality of life. It is therefore understandable that the demand for oil is constantly increasing at the same rate as human needs and activities. This demand makes it necessary to study the properties of oil in order to predict the quantities that will be produced by a hydrocarbon reservoir. Density under formation conditions is a fundamental property of petroleum fluids with numerous applications in the petroleum industry. By linking mass to volume, density plays a direct role in calculating stocks and selecting the appropriate production action plan.In the present dissertation, computational methods for estimating the density of hydrocarbon mixtures with carbon dioxide at high pressures and temperatures were studied and evaluated. In particular, it was investigated whether a simulation software can accurately approximate the density of a pentane-carbon dioxide mixture relative to its actual density as measured in the laboratory. Measurements were performed for three different ratios of pentane-carbon dioxide mixture (72-28%, 51-49% and 39.7-60.3%) at temperatures of 22oC, 70oC and 90oC and pressures from 80 bar to 500 bar.To measure the density in the present thesis, a U-shaped vibrating tube densitometer was used whose oscillation period varies according to the fluid sample. Using mathematical equations it is possible to accurately correlate the oscillation period of the tube and the density of the fluid. Particular emphasis in this diploma was given to the calibration of measuring instruments as well as to the evaluation of the reliability of measurements in order to ensure the desired accuracy of density estimation. For the simulation of the mixture and the numerical estimation of the densities, the WinProp v.2015 software of the company Computer Modeling Group was used, which implements the cubic static equation model of Peng - Robinson (PR 78) while for the optimal approximation of the density its parameters, volume shift and the interaction of molecules in pairs of components, were adjusted.
