Summary

This thesis, is concerned with the history of the town and architecture of Lefkada while the island was under British Rule, during a particular period of time where a research gap has been detected. At the same time, the research investigates urban space management focusing on governmental practices especially in urban design in the Ionian state, using Lefkada as a case study. The first British Commissioner was Sir Thomas Maitland. Under British rule a privileged group of Ionians challenged British protection. In 1818 the central government in Corfu decided to construct a canal between Lefkada and the opposite shores. Increased taxation for the canal pushed Lefkadia villagers to revolt. Infrastructure works, such as ports, administrative and military buildings, hospitals were part of the developmental project many colonial governors and modernizing Ionians promoted. The design and execution of public works projects is at the heart of debates on colonialism and development across time and space. Public works are also central in histories of the relationship between colonizers and colonized -the colonial encounter- and between any regime and its subjects as they can either generate legitimacy, discontent or both. This thesis will not only attempt to study the architectural reconstruction of the town of Lefkada during the period of time from 1825 to 1864, -after 1825 earthquake- but will also compare it to similar town cases throughout the Ionian state and Mediterranean cities, while all these were under British Rule. The primary material sources are derived not only from archival research in Greece and London (building permit archives, notarial, photographical and newspapers archives), but also from extensive bibliography and field research. Some of the research questions that this thesis includes are the following:- What is the selected morphology and structure space policy during British Rule compared to the residential policy derived from the Venetian dominion and how it is interpreted?- What is the relationship between the type of houses constructed during this particular period under the British Rule and the previous architecture of Lefkada?- Which public buildings does England decide to build so that they can enforce their presence on the island?- Is the policy of the dominated state, distinguished in the selected constructions of the island during this period or not?- What are the actions of the British administrative organization after major crises such as the earthquake on 1825, which caused significant damage in the existing constructions of the 18th century?
