Summary

As a result of the ten-year civil war in Syria, refugees are scattered throughout the Middle East and the European Union. A wave of Syrian refugees is also flooding the Greek islands, where refugee camps are being set up, closed reception and identification centers, where living conditions and quality of supply are degrading. The overcrowded refugee centers and the spread of the coronavirus pandemic are not only a burden on refugees, but also on local populations. The present diploma thesis attempts to manage the influx of Syrian refugees to the Aegean islands, and specifically to Ermoupolis of Syros, which was built by Chios and other refugees in the 19th century, as an attempt to integrate and assimilate this population. In particular, the aim of the study is the exploitation of free plots in the urban fabric of Ermoupolis by building the minimum core of full residence for a family, as well as the reuse of active industrial buildings for the creation of structures of social integration of the population. The intervention in the settlement is done in stages, initially with the mapping of free spaces and the mapping and restoration of industrial buildings, in which the housing of refugees will take place, in combination with structures for the integration of the population with a developmental logic respectively, both for refugees and for the natives. Then, additional building facilities will be created and free spaces with a charitable character will be designed for the rapprochement of both peoples and the acceptance of diversity, in order to get to know and understand elements of their cultures, in order to bridge their cultural and religious differences. In this way, a favorable environment will be formed with the dominant feature of mutual respect and understanding, a necessary element in order not to marginalize refugees, to become active citizens and to become a different, but equal, part of the local community.
