Summary

This thesis aims to highlight good Human Resources Management practices in a mining industry, since, for the most part and to the best of our knowledge, the work that has been done to date on HR development in a company is mainly descriptive.Human resource management is the approach, from a strategic point of view, to effectively manage people in an enterprise so as to help it gain competitive advantage. Firms need to alter policies, systems of operation and action of employees in order to appropriate the continuous developments in the business environment. We will observe and highlight the value of human resource management in a mining/extraction industry, which occupies a prominent position in the Greek economy. In Greece its contribution is of outstanding importance in the value added of the industry (2.9%) and the economy (0.4%), much more so compared to other countries of the European Union. Its contribution to exports is also remarkably significant, making up 5.5% of Greek exports are mining products. There are significant prospects for further development of the sector with multiple benefits for the Greek economy. However, a key prerequisite is the implementation of a series of policies for the management of mineral wealth through a functional institutional framework and an integrated approach to sustainable development. This sector is characterized by important peculiarities, which should be taken seriously into account in its human resources development strategy. In recent years, there have been signs of investment in human capital by these companies through in-house education and training, decentralized human resources development activities in the sector and the use of modern e-learning methods, as well as an increase in the recruitment of employees in the 25-34 age group and a decrease in the 45-54 age group. In summary, the contribution of good HR management practices is the cornerstone of the development and reward of the workers themselves, thanks to their training and development, the opportunities and triggers provided to them, their generalimprovement and health and safety in the workplace. For the company, it contributes to its profitability and productivity and, as a consequence, to the progress of society. In the present study, a reference to the modern and classical theories of management and the basic concepts has been addresses, underlying them, as well. More emphasis has been placed on human resources, their duties, good practices and responsibilities. Moreover, data about mining, industry, as well as its human resources, and the analysis of its peculiarities and characteristics has been gathered. Subsequently, empirical analysis was carried out, which involves the research and approach to the phenomenon this thesis deals with, the recording of the research question, and finally the statistical results, which obtained from the analysis of the subject through the interviews that took place during the period of this BSc thesis. In conclusion, the latter conclusions were analyzed and raised open questions as a consequence of the policy followed by the mining industries in human resources issues.
