Περίληψη

This article presents a methodology to transform a traditional home to a smart home. Along these lines, two observations are highlighted: first, that there is an obvious need for new concepts of “enhanced architectural design” that are driven by, and appropriate for, smart homes; and second, that it is fundamental to reconsider the role of user motivation to bridge the gap between the functionalities offered by smart services and user’s needs. Using a case study in the historical center of Athens, the article outlines an alternative approach to smart home design thinking that addresses the complex challenges of IoT integration in a more integrative, contextually relevant manner. Suggesting a more open, spatially conscious stance (through design) and a more collectively conceived IoT selection, the article advocates that when dealing with the complex challenges of everyday spaces for urban dwellers, a holistic approach to space design must be achieved.
