The term Sustainable Mobility is a prevailing factor in the sector of transport design in the European union. Its aim is to promote mobility with smart, economical and environmentally friendly choices, whose purpose is to minimize the use of motor vehicles and increase pedestrian movement, cycling and public transport. This research paper aims to analyse and evaluate the methods that are used for the maintenance of the historical centre and at the same time its development into a sustainable and functional city which conforms with its contemporary needs.In this study, policies and strategies that promote Sustainable Urban Mobility (SUM), are assessed. The object of the study is the analysis of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) in three historical centres with different strategies and population. The historical centre that are analysed are those of Vitoria -Gasteiz in Spain, Bologna in Italy and Rethymno in Greece. In the first part of the paper, the concepts of Sustainable Urban Movement Plan (SUMP) is analysed. In the second part example of SUMPs in the selected historical centre are analysed and lastly the final conclusions, of the issues and advantages of each case, are drawn.
