Summary

In 2019 the humanity witnessed a major health outbreak with coronavirus (COVID) growing eventually from a local infection to a pandemic in an unprecedented rate. This situation affected the way the people interact, work or even reside in a dwelling. Apart from the research towards the medical aspects of the COVID infection, other fields like architecture focused on alterations of the housing design with the goal to stall the contagiousness of the virus. In this research work, we study how the flexible housing design may bring down the rise of bacteria or virus foci by exploiting the natural resources such as air or light or by using material not prone to infections. In addition, we study how the housing environment can balance the psychological health of a person who is bound to pandemic restrictions. We thus suggest a design which follows an interactive, transformable, adaptive and responsive architectural approach. In this design we also propose the use of flexible furnishing, open spaces, natural lighting and green materials. Adopting such approach, the housing during a pandemic can be an area safe for each inhabitant’s health but also an area for psychological equilibrium and relaxation. In summary, the current circumstances that we live require adaptability in many aspects of our life and housing design may be one such since it could advance our interaction, secure our health and prevents future pandemic scenarios.
