Summary

This current diploma thesis aims to calculate some of the main parameters of Partial Face Machine using real-time data from the tunnel extension of Line 3 of the Metro Bilbao. The most important of the parameters is the specific energy of cutting, defined as the energy consumption which occurs from the cutting picks of the cutting head in order to remove a unit volume of geomaterial. The specific energy was calculated for four different cutting faces which occurred on the period of 13/3 – 15/3/2010 along the cross-section of the tunnel. It briefly presented the available underground excavations methods using mechanical excavations machines. Subsequently, an extensive analysis of the Partial Face Machine (also known as Roadheader, RHD), over their technical, functional characteristics and field of application. The data used were referenced on the use of the machine for this excavation of the faces in the above period using mathematical equations that describe the main functions of the RHD. As a result, was calculated the consumable power, the cutting depth of the machine, the number of cutting picks during the excavation time and the applying cutting forces. The specific energy was calculated with two different methods as it depends on the design and functional characteristics of the machine. Finally, the simulation of the calculated parameters in the tunnel cross-section was carried out with a color code used to evaluate the machine performance during its operational use.
