Summary

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a technology that has been available since the 1950s and saw development several years later in the 1970s. Nowadays, it is one of the key technologies for calculating distances with many applications. The mapping of the three-dimensional space is a process that requires precision and is usually time-consuming. In particular, the realistic visualization of three-dimensional spaces with increased complexity, such as for example the mapping of natural formations (caves, slopes) is an extremely difficult process. However, the use of terrestrial LiDAR scanners and the evolution of imaging methods in the digital space have made the mapping process extremely accessible and easy to use. In the context of the diploma thesis, a natural slope was captured in the outdoor area of a quarry using a terrestrial LiDAR Scanner. The digital model created was visualized in a virtual reality environment, extending the use of digital impression. This virtual environment was deemed capable of hosting many different Health and Safety scenarios in the quarry, creating opportunities for safe training and information for the quarry staff.
