| Content Summary | The Mediterranean is a dimensional existence that expresses polymorphy where its ambiguous borders represent a complexity that in a way defines the identity of Europe. It is fundamental to investigate the syncretism of the Mediterranean both on a theoretical and administrative basis. In order to envision a possible future of the Great Sea it is essential to explore historical and philosophical views from a variety of scholars as well as go through European, National, and Regional planning policies of the Union using a multiscale top down and bottom up approach to bridge those findings. The main focus is on the insular territories of Europe and specifically the six largest islands of the Mediterranean. Post economic crisis period and the current Covid-19 pandemic has brought more than ever the world to experience what it is to live in an insular context. The paper aims to investigate and define possible zones of development on those large six islands both on regional and local scale based on the perspective of an emerging new citizen, the digital nomad. This recent worldwide phenomenon of nomadism is explored and questioned if it can work as a catalyst against certain challenges those insular territories face as well as to be seen contributing towards the repopulation of the countryside in general. Pilot projects and case studies as well as statistics, maps and sense of place notional representations are used as territorial spatial analysis tools in order to envision a potential, maybe utopic, Archipelagic Federation of the Mediterranean; a leasing urbanism space inhabited by the digital nomad, as the new Odysseus. | en |
