Summary

The settlement of Etia in Lassithi, Crete, was the most important fief of the Armenohandradas plateau during the Venetian occupation. Today the settlement is abandoned and exposed to the ravages of time. This paper attempts to build a comprehensive picture of the historical and urban palimpsest of the settlement and the circumstances that led to its abandonment at the beginning of the 21st century. This objective is realized by combining the available historical documents and primary field research. In addition, mapping plans of the settlement are presented through which the elements that complete its history and identity are recorded and analysed. Finally, in the light of the repopulation of the settlement and corresponding cases of abandoned settlements, examples of restoration and expansion are studied. Each case selected takes a different approach to the issue of the integration of new buildings and interventions in the existing fabric.
