Since ancient times, the area of the atrium was a form of forecourt that served a variety of needs. This paper examines the contribution of the atrium in the functioning of religious buildings. It also studies in which level the religious purposes are being fulfilled through this space, beyond its architectural necessity, with references to the Ancient and the Roman period, the Byzantine period and to a lesser extent the most recent one. Religious buildings from the two largest religions, Christianity and Islam, are chosen to be analyzed. Finally, the aim of this research is to clarify how this structure is associated with the functional and worship purposes of each religion and also how it organizes a religious building as well as the needs it serves, functional, religious, symbolic, bioclimatic.
